A culture's jokes, proverbs, and aphorisms tell us a great deal about the lives and thoughts of the people who share the culture. They give us insights into the present and the past of groups, especially as they relate to themselves and to their neighbors. The cultures of Ukraine and Russian peoples have much in common and likewise much that is unique to one culture and distinct from the other.
Jokes are more than quips and short stories that are meant to be funny or make us laugh. They can act as forms of communication that do more than simply ridicule. Jokes can have deeper meanings. They can make that unspeakable able to be heard. They are short in nature but are able to express a depth of thought. The terse statements and short stories gathered here from the Ukrainian and Russian cultures can give us another eye into the minds of these people.
