With the emergence of artificial intelligence applied to traditional fields of art, a new lexicon is required to describe creative art forms which did not exist prior to the application of AI.
The foundational question is, "Does AI create art?" Can whatever pops out of the "brain" of AI be called "art?"
If Michelangelo or DeVinci had an AI chip hidden in their palettes when they painted the Sistine Chapel and the Mona Lisa, would their masterpieces still be called masterpieces. Would they have chosen their colors or would the "machine" have chosen them? These are questions that will not quickly or easily be answered.In the case at hand , when AI is blended with some cartoon characters, is the final product still a cartoon? Or, is the outcome more than a cartoon? Or, less? The level of art is admittedly not the same when comparing Donald Duck to deVinci. However, the questions must be asked? And, answered.
As the artist who created the art in the above image, I had a hand in the production of the AI "background," or call it "the stage." Like the producer, director, and writer of a stage play, I described to the AI "engine" what I wanted the physical setting to look like. I wrote the directions in the script. Who is the artist? The person who described the scene or the AI software that created it on canvas?
Until someone else makes a winning argument that the Washington Capitol with two caricature figures on topic is simply a cartoon, I am taking the position that the blend of the caricatures and the AI is a painting. It is not a photograph. It is not a sketch. It it is not a scan. It is a painting.
